Dance Performance Review with Actfa Dance School Singapore

After participating in Actfa Dance School Singapore's 18th June Dance Performance, and showing the audience what we have learnt these past few month in our dance classes in the dance school, here is my review on my progress as a dancer.

What I have improved on so far

I will outline my improvements based on the two 6 months period that make up my SFDF dance course. As compared to the prior six months of the course, I was able to hold my body better, execute isolation movements sharper and more accurately, complete more rounds of salsa and jazz spins with better precision.

In the first 6 months, I did not fully comprehend the phrase “hold your body”. To me, it was really an abstract concept and I did not know how to lock my body and pull up. As such, the execution of my spins and isolation movements were affected. I could not even spin two rounds on two feet without shifting my position, or slightly losing balance towards the end. I could only properly complete one jazz spin, attempting two or more would always make me fall off centre and lose balance. As for isolations, my body waves used to look segmented and were not big enough. I could not really move my shoulders, thus unable to do the shimmies. My movements were more sluggish in general than sharp or precise.

In the subsequent 6 months, I slowly realized that I have become slightly better. I no longer have to take a conscious effort to execute a dance move. It sort of just comes naturally when I focus hard enough. I am now able to do 4 salsa spins 80% of the time. My right spins are usually quite on the spot, but I always wander off right when I do my 4 left spins, as I cannot spot that well when I spin on the left. I can now do 2 jazz spins; however, sometimes I tend to not hold my tip top through completion. As for isolations, my body waves are bigger and much less segmented-looking. I am now able to execute the shimmies and incorporate them into the various performances. My movements became slightly sharper in general.

What I need to work on more after seeing myself in the video

I realize that I sometimes still fail to hold my body or hold my chest up at certain points in the middle of the performance. I will now have to always take the conscious effort to remind myself now and then during practice to do so. I have realized that my body waves still need improvement. I need to make more effort in ensuring that I always have my hands and feet in the right place and properly pointed or fist clenched. I also have to be very mindful of the positions of my feet and hand so that it coordinates with every other performer. I also have to make sure I execute big isolation movements as they tend to look very small from the audience point of view.
