Dance Classes Singapore: Motivation for Dance

Actfa Dance School Singapore Student Recital Jun 2011 Post Performance Review Essay

I did not think my dance performance for the June Recital was better than the one before. I performed 2 more dances and the choreography for most of the dances was of a higher level. Despite so, I knew I did not improve as much as I want to nor did I perform up to my own expectation. The moment I look at myself in the video, I knew why.

I managed to learn the moves in the routine and executed them but I did not look good. It does seem like I was doing aerobics rather than dancing the choreography. There were moments when I was stiff and when I was not stiff, I was not fluid either.

Thinking back to the last few months of dance classes and I realised my mind was preoccupied with some affairs or I am simply too fatigue to dance. Those months it felt like I was dragging myself to practise and I was there because I made a choice to be there. Dancing became routine and it was not until the performance rehearsals did I occurred to reflect upon the reason I dance.

I reached inside of me and searched my feelings. And there it was, the feeling of my body moving to the rhythm of the music. Dancing is part of who I am and it is not something I do. Then why do I not dance well? With the hours of practise and the ample opportunities to perform at ACTFA Dance School Singapore, it simply does not make sense that I do not dance well. I thought about it and the answer came naturally to me. There is no desire in me to want to be a good dancer.

I guess I always knew there was not a desire in me to be good dancer. There is a difference in wanting to execute choreography well and delivering a splendid performance. The prior is executing a flawless routine and the latter is to express myself through the choreography, to dance it. So far, I simply wanted to do well by executing a flawless routine.

My less than appealing performance was at best a source of frustration and anger for change. It is not motivational. I want to be better and to figure out what is the missing ingredient. I needed something inspirational and then it dawn upon me. Make It Or Break It.

Gymnastics means the world to those fictional girls and it is part of who they are. In the context of me being a dancer, I am not much different than they are. Well perhaps, maybe I am much older than they are. Still, why do they have a shot at the Olympics and I barely make the cut for an amateur dancer passing off as a professional dancer? They want to win bad enough to push themselves every time they are at practise and they see themselves as champions worthy of the prize. I simply did not.

Now, I asked myself if I want to be a good dancer and the answer is resounding yes. I know what I have to do. There will be no more drama or distractions for me on the dance floor. I will learn how to let the music guide my moves. Instructions will no longer guidelines to me but goals I am going to strive hard to achieve. And from now when I train, I am going to start looking at the mirror at myself and start seeing myself as a good dancer.
